Setting up a legal partnership
Solicitors and barristers who form a legal partnership must notify the LSRA of their intention to provide legal services in this new business structure. On this page, you can find information about the notification process and view the Register of Legal Partnerships.
Forming a legal partnership
The basis of a legal partnership is a written agreement formed under the law of the State by two or more partners, at least one of whom must be a practising barrister.
Once formed, a legal partnership must notify the LSRA of its intention to provide legal services and pay a fee of €575. A legal partnership shall not provide legal services until it has notified the LSRA.
For bank details, please email [email protected].
The notification process and next steps
A legal partnership must supply the LSRA with the following details, which are set out in the Commencement Notification Form:
- Partnership name, principal address, email address, and telephone number.
- If applicable, date of approval by the LSRA of the name of the legal partnership.
- Date of notification.
- Date of intended commencement of legal services provision.
- Confirmation that the legal partnership has in place or will have in place from the date of the provision of legal services, appropriate professional indemnity insurance (PII). The policy number and the details of the insurer and broker, if applicable, must also be supplied.
- The names of all the partners and their practising barrister reference number or solicitor number.
- Confirmation that the legal partnership is a partnership formed under the law of the State by written agreement, by two or more legal practitioners, at least one of whom is a practising barrister, for the purpose of providing legal services.
Once we receive your correctly completed Commencement Notification Form and the full fee, the LSRA will check the details supplied and then either:
- Issue a response confirming that your legal partnership has been added to the Register of Legal Partnerships, or
- Request clarification regarding the details on the form.
